Pepperpot > Abstract

This project and product investigates the use of the Artificial Intelligence based Expert System methodology and how it can be applied to a non-traditional area of knowledge, specifically attempting to mimic the recipe selection process undertaken by an expert chef. Using a J2ME development environment to design and implement a product for the Windows CE platform on an HP iPAQ PocketPC, the product assesses and applies the knowledge base, inference engine and knowledge elicitation principles of Expert Systems against this previously untried area of expertise.

Including a comprehensive analysis of Expert Systems methodology, consideration for implementing on the mobile platform and how HCI plays a part in design for a product of this nature, the project successfully introduces and tests a working Java product on the iPAQ.

Utilising appropriate HCI techniques for the reduced screen environment of the iPAQ, the product uses a series of radio buttons to elicit user input and works with external text files held on the device to provide a set of recipes for the user to view whilst persisting information throughout the duration of the product.

Featuring a comprehensive review of the techniques and approach to coding in the product, the report provides details of how this product has been implemented and where future work around this platform can be taken.

Although not a complete product and an obvious replacement to interaction with a human expert on cooking, the product is a successful investigation in how a highly academic and established area of computing can be applied to a relatively new area of the computing industry.
